RECOIL magazine attempts to mate a monkey and a football...fails as expected...

Recoil magazines editorial process.....

RECOIL magazine started up this past year to quite a furor in some circles.  Its heavy reliance on photography of tactical weapons and gear and short box type articles and reviews seemed to make it the firearms equivalent of Maxim magazine.  I really never got into it though as the cost at the newstand was high, it wasn't widely available and I always thought the magazine put a little too much emphasis on style over substance.  Still, I was hoping it would make a good go of it as any pro-2A mag out there is good for "the cause", isn't it?

Well, not always I guess...

From an article in their magazine about the H&K MP7, the writer is Editor Jerry Tsai....

"...the MP7A1 is unavailable to civilians and for good reason. We all know that’s technology no civvies should ever get to lay their hands on. This is a purpose-built weapon with no sporting applications to speak of."
And as expected the gun culture goes ape shit....or monkey shit...whatever....

Excuse me..Um, yeah....Jerry, could you please explain this "Typical" cover of your magazine... last time I checked there weren't too many guys walking out of the woods in safety blaze orange with this stuff on after bagging a Bambi.

Yeah, every single issue of your magazine is filled with pictures of stuff designed as a "purpose built weapon".   Let's face it guy, your readers are not a bunch of tweed and plaid wearing "Fudds", they are probably a bunch of recreational shooters like myself with a good mix of firearm professionals, survivalist types and mall ninja types in there for good measure.   Hey, its cool...not like its illegal in this country (yet) to own the types of weapons that you profile in your mag, as long as you follow all BATFE regulations in acquiring them.  You should know your audience.    The claim by you is that this particular item may not have a "sporting purpose", but then again it doesn't have to in order to be owned by a legitimate purchaser.  Lets face it guy, you got caught saying the wrong thing....IN PRINT.  Yeah, and you're the editor and the person making the comment means that this did not go to print without your personal knowledge.  I don't know, maybe you were trying too hard to try and cover H und K's position on the issue and keep you in their good graces or something.  I mean they are a European company and the private ownership of firearms modeled after the MP7 is a bit alien to them.  Maybe you just misquoted yourself....

"JT" later posted a retraction of his own comments but I think its a bit late.  Many more highly thought of folks in the 2A arena have spoken out on the article and it doesn't look good for you guys....  Mad Ogre said it best....

No offense to any mentally handicapped readers out there....

Oh yeah, I should also point out that there is a Semi-Auto version of the MP5 that has been offered before....a firearm that after the 1980 Iranian Embassy Crisis in London that many considered "a purpose built weapon" that civilians should not own I am sure....
