OSHP Shotguns not as bountiful as I thought..

One of the more commented on posts as of lately has been about the Remington 870 shotguns the Ohio State Highway Patrol is replacing and are (were) available at Vance's in Columbus for $299.  Got a comment that one of my readers went down to the store for one and they were out!  Apparently he was told they were having a hard time getting the new shotty's to replace the old ones.  I was told that they had over a thousand to sell without any indication that they were not already in possession of them.

To anyone else that may have made a trip for nothing, I sincerely apologize.  I did not intend to be a "Gun tease" with that post and merely wanted to let others know about (what I still consider to be) a great deal on a great gun locally here in Columbus.

You can contact Vance's directly to check on inventory of these guns before you make the drive at the following numbers:

                            Columbus: 614-471-7000
                 Hebron: 740-928-3474

If you can find one in stock at either location I still think that they are a great value!

I went to Vance yesterday seeking one or two of these guns. I walked in looking for the cart o' shotties but found none. Upon inquiring at the counter, I was told they are out but are taking orders. They expect to receive at least 1000 more of these guns.

I ordered two. They may arrive in a week. They may arrive in three months. I don't care so long as I get them, and I probably will.

They are on sale right now for $270 each.

Yeah, I saw they were in the monthly flyer for $270 and have made arangements to go back up for another Saturday morning. I guess I'll give them a call first. They were also advertising trade-in S&W Model 64 .38spl revolvers in stainless for $250. I may have to make the trip anyway for that deal.

I knew that they would make the flyer sooner or later...$270..great price

I got one of the Model 64's in stainless from the Ohio Dept of Corrections (Lucas County Jail or prison...hi Maurice Clarett) and it shoots great...

Thanks! Sometime we should get together for lunch and/or to shoot something. I'm a member at Aimhi but I never shoot often enough. It's hard with kids and besides, it's a 52 mile round trip from my home on Columbus' west side. (West siiiiiiiiiiiiide, yo!)

Looking at prices for shotguns on Armslist (quite of few of which are probably laughably overpriced), these OSHP shotguns are a steal. I shouldn't have stopped at two!

Made the trip up to Buckeye from Cincy this past Saturday and picked up one of the S&W Model 64s. They were definitely out of the OSHP 870s and didn't have a firm grasp on when more may be arriving...glad I was able to get one of the first batch!

The 64 I purchased is a 64-5 with a Hogue Monogrip. I haven't had it to the range yet, but am looking forward to it. I also picked up their last speedloader for this gun. They had the entire top row of an endcap stocked with these at one point, so I'm guessing the response to their advertisement at $250 has been very successful. I don't know that they had more than a half dozen or so left. My brother-in-law picked one up as well. His is a 64-8 and is definitely newer than mine, as his had the transfer bar in lieu of the hammer mounted firing pin mine sports.

Also, you were right...Buckeye is awesome! Well worth the half day spent to get there, spend a few hundred bucks, and get home!

Good for you! They had a deal going for a while where you could get 2 used speed loaders for those 64's and a belt pouch for them for $10, same with the holsters! I got a holster, a total of 4 speed loaders and 2 pouches. With the 870 I pretty much now have as much firepower as most police officers had until the mid to late 80's in my hands now.

Update: Last Thursday while vacationing in Sin City I received a call from Vance Outdoors stating that my two OSHP 870's had arrived. Today I drove to Vance and took possession of them after suffering the indignity of the BATFE form and the NICS inquiry. The guns are cosmetically challenged but appear to be in excellent working order. I'm happy to have them.

NICS note: I've never purchased more than one gun at a time. Today I filled out the BATFE form under the watchful eye of a Vance gun counter salesman. After I completed the form, he told me that it would take about 10 minutes and that he had to provide the answer to a question about why I was buying more than one gun. I think I blinked a couple of times before I realized he was asking me to provide an answer. My answer was simple: these are inexpensive. Apparently the NICS wonk accepted the answer because in about 15 minutes I was greenlighted and had my shotguns.

Oh, and there's a new box on the BATFE form requiring me to classify myself as latino or non-latino, or some such. Because, you know, if you can't classify gun buyers by the color of their skin (or more acccurately, by their own description of the color of their skin), then, you know, people shouldn't be allowed to buy guns.

Personal note: I sent a message to the email address you provided about two weeks ago. Did you get it?

OH! I forgot to say that I asked how many OSHP 870's arrived in this batch and the answer was "not many". The clerk said he heard that OSHP was having trouble with the replacement guns so they were holding on to the old guns until the issues were resolved. So for those of your readers who may also have one of thesee 870's on order, be patient.

Hey thanks for the update... I did your email, sorry I have Ben busy, on vacation now but will get back with you when I get back.

I also noticed the Latino question on the form...as for the why more than one issue? Knee jerk reaction from BATFE over Aurora?

What is the status of these OSP shotguns? I'm far away in North Carolina and want to try to order one to my local dealer if they are in stock.

Huey said...

well, honestly I don't know, it appears that after the initial batch (which I was lucky to get one from) there has been some difficulty in getting them in fast enough to replace demand. I would call the store directly and ask for the status. Also, I believe that they have a waiting list at the current time...
