2nd Amendment to the Constitution of The United States of America

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

"I ask sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people except for a few politicians."

Shot Congresswoman returns to congress to cast debt ceiling vote..

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D - AZ) make a surprise return to the floor of congress last last night to vote on the controversial debt ceiling bill. Her entrance from a side door on the floor of congress without fanfare cause members on both sides of the isle to erupt with applause at her return after being shot in the head 7 months ago in Arizona at a "Congress on Your Corner" meeting by derained gunman Jared Loughner, who also killed 6 other people in the shooting.

Her presence is being heralded as a "uniting force" in the passing of the bill, although if she had remained absent and abstained from voting the outcome would of been the same. Some have said already that she was being used by the Democratic party to gain sympathy and detract from the issue at hand on the vote, which I find absurd since the bill was introduced by Speaker of the House John Boehner (R - OH) who said on the news that even after some partisan and bi-partisan compromise on it to get it to a vote he still got "98% of what I wanted" from it. At least I hope she wasn't summoned to give a "feel good" ending to this political bickering that has caused our reputation as the "gold standard" for international credit to be tarnished.

Getting back to Representative Giffords, personally I am overjoyed to see her up and about and apparently recuperating so well. She was shot in the head which in many cases is a sure way to be shot and not walk into Congress 7 months later. How did she survive? Divine intervention? Medical technology? Well I am sure some people will just try and use this to show how ineffective the 9mm round (used in the shooting out of G19 with a 33 round magazine) is....for me, I would like to think that maybe being a politician saved her life, for we all know they are some of the most hard headed people on Earth!

More likely than not we will never know what caused her light to stay on when many would of been snuffed out by that same wound. Remember this post I did a while back that talked about chaos theory and the butterfly affect? There are so many micro factors that may have contributed to her surviving we will never know...they angle of the entry may have been just enough to cause the round to miss a major artery...the gunman may have delayed pulling the trigger just long enough for her to move out of a shot alignment that would of been deadly...just so many factors. The important thing is this, almost anyone you would survey would agree that being shot in the head with a 9mm round at the range she was shot at would be fatal. When choosing a round to carry in your defensive firearm don't just say "hey I got ++P++ Super black ninja depleted uranium ballistic hollow point rounds loaded" and assume that they do magic...they don't. Again while repeated observation of a rounds performance may allow us to draw general conclusions as to its effectiveness, you must constantly assess your threat if engaged to determine what the proper response is. A man wounded intent on harming you is often the most dangerous type of man to face.

Again, I wish the Congresswoman the best in her recovery, but am afraid that incident will once again lead to an attack on our 2nd amendment rights and possible a magazine ban in the future.

Giffords should have never showed up there. It's a needless distraction from the business at hand, and certainly manufactured.

with technology the way it is and under her circumstances you would think she would be able to electronically cast a vote, as they all pretty much do from their seats anyway...

Yeah, I hope it wasn't staged but then again you know politics in DC...but I would like to think not...

I think it was emotional manipulation, but that doesn't mean that I'm not glad to see that she pulled through. Better than having her die and becoming a martyr for the left wing. As to why she survived, I can only assume that a 9mm at that range had the speed and penetration to go through the part of the cerebrum that deals with bodily awareness (the part of the brain she was hit in), without doing too much damage aside from a small hole that the brain would swell around and seal up quickly.

I'm not a doctor (my brother took care of that wish for good old Mom and Dad...) but I did know a few folks in the 285th CSH that were up in Baghdad in 2006 - 2007 and one of them told me that the new understanding about penetrating brain injury is that if a projectile only penetrates one hemisphere that some recovery may be possible and possibly even some type of transfer of responsibility for function from the damaged area to another. Apparently when everything goes downhill is when the membrane between the 2 hemispheres is disrupted when a projectile transects both hemispheres....don't know if that holds water but it was what I was told....either way, she is damn lucky to be alive and yes, if she had succumbed I am sure they would of passed the "Giffords Bill" banning large cap mags and such already...
