RIP MAJ Dick Winters...Band of Brothers hero and legendary leader

In case you haven't heard, MAJ Dick Winters, whose war experiences were a major part of the epic HBO series Band of Brothers died last week on January 2nd, 2011. Apparently in keeping with the wishes of the family and MAJ Winters himself he was buried in a small, private ceremony and the news of his passing is only now being released.

For those who have seen the series or read the book, you know of his legendary status in the unit and the overwhelming respect his men had for him. The attack he lead on a artillery battery during the Normandy invasion is still taught as an example of how a smaller, motivated force using proper tactics can overcome a numerically larger force. For those of you that have somehow avoided either seeing or reading his story...well, its about time to get off your 4th point of contact and do it!

He was also one of those rare guys who actually looked better than the Hollywood actor they got to play him!!

Rest in peace Airborne!! We gratefully thank you for the gift of freedom you helped give us!!

When most of us think of Dick Winters, we think of the actor Damien Lewis who portrayed him in the HBO mini-series...

..while in real life Dick Winters could have been a leading man in the movies as well as leading men into battle.
