Mythbusters asks.."Can you chop down a tree with a machine gun"

Hell yes you can!!! well, a mini-gun to be precise...

But as a private citizen who must buy his own ammo I cringe at watching that many rounds being used....

Not bad, but they should've had an M60 and/or an M2 in there. Heck, a Barrett would've worked too. Betcha it wouldn't have taken as long for a .50 to cut down a tree...

no doubt, but what do these folks know about guns anyway?

problem with there execution of this 'myth' is that they did not use a tree, they cut down a log.

I have cut down a birch tree, about 50 feet tall about 25(or so) in diameter, ~25 feet from our shooting platform, with a 44 mag, we nailed a 2x4 to it and hung targets on the 2x4, but one target was in front of the tree(out of 3 targets) after putting quite a few rounds in to over about a month, the tree went creeeek, and then pow it was down for the count. with a single action 44 mag Ruger revolver.

I have also cut down a decent sized pine tree, about 60 feet tall about 30 inches in diameter, also with the 2x4 holding target method, but that one was cut down with a mix of long arms, it was about 275m from our shooting position.

Dont know why this is a myth, i know quite a few people that have done it.
